After assessing the Barclays Premier League, we examine today the relationship between sporting performance and the average annual salaries paid per player of the clubs from Italian Serie A.

First, we will look at each season between 2016/2017 and 2019/2020 (until matchday 24) to analyze which clubs achieved better results between these variables. Then, we will examine the 15 clubs that remained on the Serie A during these seasons and how they performed compared with how much they paid on average per player.

2016/2017

In the edition of 2016/2017 of the Serie A, Juventus (who else?) won the competition also presenting the highest annual average salary per player.

From a positive perspective, Atalanta achieved the 4th position in the competition with only the 14th highest average salary amount. In the opposite perspective, Genoa was the case with less success finishing in the 16th place with the 8th highest average annual salary per player.

Juventus, AS Roma, Torino and Sassuolo presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the competition.

2017/2018

In the following season, Juventus was crowned champion once more with the highest annual average salary per player.

Atalanta was again the surprise achieving the 7th position in the league with only the 13th highest salary value. On the opposite side, AC Milan, Bologna and Hellas Verona were the cases with less success: the Milan giant finished in the 6th place with the 2nd highest amount per players, Bologna finished in the 15th position with 11th highest amount, and, finally, Hellas Verona achieved the 19th place with the 15th highest value per player.

Only Juventus presented the same position in the salaries ranking as it did in the competition.

2018/2019

In the last edition of the Serie A, Juventus won once more the competition presenting the highest annual average salary per player.

From a positive perspective, Atalanta achieved the 3rd position in the competition with the 13th highest salary value. In the opposite perspective, Fiorentina was the case with less success finishing in 16th place with the 8th highest average annual salaries per player.

Juventus, Torino, Sampdoria, Bologna, and Frosinone presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the Premier League.

2019/2020

With 24 matches played, Juventus is close to being crowned champions with the highest annual average salary per player of the league.

On the positive side, Hellas Verona is performing incredibly well in the 7th position in the competition with the 2nd lowest salary amount. In the opposite perspective, Torino is, until now, the case with less success occupying the 14th place with the 7th highest average annual salaries per player.

Only Juventus and Internazionale have, so far, presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the Premier League.

Finally, we analyzed the performance and salaries of the 15 clubs that took part in the Serie A between 2016/2017 and 2019/2020 (until matchday 24).

We end this series of articles with the clubs from Ligue 1.

In the next season, Paris Saint-Germain was crowned champion with the highest annual average salary per player.

Dijon and Guingamp were the surprises achieving the 11th and 12th positions in the league with only the 17th and 18th highest salary values. On the opposite side, Lille was again the case with less success finishing in the 17th place with the 7th highest amount per player.

PSG, AS Monaco, Girondins Bordeaux and Strasbourg presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the competition.

2018/2019

In the 2018/2019 edition of the Ligue 1 it was not different and PSG won once more the competition presenting the highest annual average salary per player.

From a positive perspective, Nimes achieved the 9th position in the competition with the lowest salary value. In the opposite perspective, AS Monaco was the case with less success finishing in 17th place with the 4th highest average annual salary per player.

PSG, Olympique Lyonnais and Angers presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the Premier League.

2019/2020

With the cancellation of the season due to the pandemic, PSG won the league once again with the highest annual average salary per player of the league.

On the positive side, Stade Reims performed incredibly well finishing in the 5th position in the competition with the 17th highest salary amount per player. In the opposite perspective, Saint Étienne was the case with less success occupying the 17th place with the 6th highest average annual salary per player.

Only PSG presented the same position in the salaries ranking as it did in the Premier League.

Finally, we analyzed the performance and salaries of the 14 clubs that took part in the Ligue 1 between 2016/2017 and 2019/2020.

The giant Paris Saint-Germain is the club with the highest average annual salary per player. Nantes and Angers were the clubs with more success when comparing sporting performance and salaries since, on average, they achieved the 10th and 12th places with only the 13th and 15th highest average amounts per player.

In the edition of 2016/2017, Bayern Munchen won the competition also presenting the highest annual average salary per player.

From a positive perspective, Freiburg achieved the 7th position in the competition with only the 3rd lowest average salary amount per player. In the opposite perspective, Wolfsburg was the case with less success finishing in the 16th place with the 4th highest average annual salary per player.

Bayern Munchen, Ingolstadt 04 and Darmstadt 98 presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the competition.

2017/2018

In the next season, Bayern Munchen was crowned champion once more with the highest annual average salary per player.

Stuttgart was the surprise achieving the 7th position in the league with only the 15th highest salary value. On the opposite side, Wolfsburg was again the case with less success finishing in the 16th place with the 3rd highest amount per player.

Bayern Munchen, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, Hertha and Mainz presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the competition.

2018/2019

In the last edition of the Bundesliga it was not different and Bayern Munchen won once more the competition presenting the highest annual average salary per player.

From a positive perspective, Fortuna Dusseldorf achieved the 10th position in the competition with the 16th highest salary value. In the opposite perspective, Schalke 04 was the case with less success finishing in 14th place with the 4th highest average annual salaries per player.

Bayern Munchen, Borussia Dortmund, Augsburg and Nurnberg presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in Bundesliga.

2019/2020

With 32 matches played, Bayern Munchen is close to being crowned champions one more time with the highest annual average salary per player of the league.

On the positive side, Freiburg is performing incredibly well in the 8th position in the competition with the 3rd lowest salary amount per player. In the opposite perspective, Werder Bremen is, at the moment, the case with less success occupying the 17th place with the 9th highest average annual salaries per player.

Bayern Munchen, Borussia Dortmund, Hertha and Paderborn have, so far, presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the Premier League.

Burnley was the surprise achieving the 7th position in the league with only the 18th highest salary value. On the opposite side, West Bromwich was the case with less success finishing in the last place with the 12th highest average annual salary per player.

Crystal Palace, Everton, and Leicester presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the competition.

2018/2019

In the last edition of the Barclays Premier League, Manchester City won once more the competition presenting the 2nd highest annual average salary per player.

From a positive perspective, Wolverhampton achieved the 7th position in the competition with the 14th highest salary value. In the opposite perspective, Manchester United and Southampton were the cases with less success finishing in 6th and 16th place with the 1st and 11th highest average annual salaries per player.

Only Chelsea and Arsenal presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the Premier League.

2019/2020

With 29 matches played, Liverpool is very close to being crowned champions with the 3rd highest annual average salary per player of the league.

On the positive side, Sheffield United is performing incredibly well in the 6th position in the competition with the lowest salary value. In the opposite perspective, West Ham is, until now, the case with less success occupying the 16th place with the 9th highest average annual salaries per player.

Only Newcastle has, so far, presented the same position in the salaries ranking as they did in the Premier League.
