With the end of the Liga NOS won by FC Porto and with Carlos Vinicius from SL Benfica as the main scorer, we present you the relationship between the squads’ market value and the league standings as well as the impact on that valuation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The big winner in this analysis is Gil Vicente FC by having reached the 10th position in the championship presenting the squad with the lowest market value (5 million Euros on 07/2019 and 10 million on 07/2020). The good performances of Henrique Gomes, Sandro Lima (10 goals scored in the League) and Ygor Nogueira contributed a lot to this achievement.

FC Famalicão also stood out, reaching the 6th position in the championship with the 12th most valued squad at the beginning of the competition. In the Famalicão side, Fábio Martins stood out with 12 goals scored, as well as Diogo Gonçalves, Pedro Gonçalves and Toni Martinez with 10 goals scored.

On the other hand, Portimonense SC ended up being the biggest disappointment, which, with a squad currently valued at around 17 million Euros and the 6th most valuable at the beginning of the season, was unable to abandon the 17th place in the Portuguese league and will compete in the second division (Liga PRO) in 2020/2021.

Between the 1st of April and the 15th of June, the market values ​​of the squads suffered an abrupt drop due to the pandemic, about 19%, with SL Benfica being the most harmed due to the devaluation of its players by about 62 million Euros. With the resumption of the championships, these values ​​have been slowly rising in some cases.

Social networks are undoubtedly the fastest and most comprehensive way for clubs to communicate with their supporters. Today, we present the third ranking of Liga NOS clubs on social networks related to the total number of followers. In this edition we have added the numbers from YouTube.

In aggregate terms, the number of fans of the clubs present in this edition of Liga NOS in the current month corresponds to a total of 20,278,500, representing an increase of 0.5% compared to June not taking into account the numbers from YouTube. Facebook continues to aggregate 58% while Instagram represents now 22%, Twitter 18%, and YouTube only 2%.

Regarding the clubs, FC Porto, SL Benfica, and Sporting CP remain on the top-3 with a growth of about 0.5%, followed by SC Braga, with the first three clubs aggregating 88% of the total fans.

In aggregate terms, the number of fans of the clubs present in this edition of Liga NOS in the current month corresponds to a total of 19,753,600, representing an increase of 0.2% compared to May. Facebook continues to aggregate 59%, although some clubs have recorded decreasing numbers, while Instagram represents now 23% and Twitter 18%.

Regarding the clubs, FC Porto, SL Benfica, and Sporting CP remain on the top-3 with a growth of about 0.1%, followed by SC Braga, with the first three clubs aggregating 88% of the total fans (1% less compared to last month).

Depending on their involvement, the squads they have, their game culture, the success of their sporting and business strategies and the challenges caused by opponents, they present different volumes of scored goals and, in specific cases, score less than others but manage to obtain a significant number of points allowing them to achieve comfort throughout the seasons.

Each club adapts its strategy to its objectives and constraints and ends up adopting different game models that converge in greater or lesser percentages of ball possession.

Football Industry analyzed this issue verifying the performance of 73 clubs that remained in the main divisions of Germany, Spain, France, England, Italy, and Portugal between the seasons 2014/2015 and 2018/2019.

Thus, we present below the ranking of the teams that have the best relationship between ball possession and goals scored, namely, reaching a greater number of goals with a lower percentage of ball possession.

In aggregate terms, the number of fans of the clubs participating in this edition of Liga NOS corresponds to a total of 19,722,800. Facebook represents 59% while Instagram accounts for 22% and Twitter 19%.

Regarding the clubs, FC Porto, SL Benfica, and Sporting CP occupy the podium, followed by SC Braga, with the first three clubs accounting for 89% of total fans.

With Liga NOS still waiting for its start, Football Industry analyzed the performance of the 83 players who occupy the most advanced positions of the 18 clubs that are part of the competition and who participated in at least 50% of the games. The indicators analyzed were its effectiveness (conversion rate – the percentage of shots turned into goals) and its influence on the team (weight of its goals in the club’s total).

Efficiency

Regarding the analysis of the conversion rate, Carlos Vinicius from SL Benfica stands out in the first position with 32% having scored 15 goals in 22 games. It is also, in this ranking, the player with most goals scored so far followed by Fábio Abreu from Moreirense FC, Sandro Lima from Gil Vicente FC, and Paulinho from SC Braga all of them with 10 goals so far. Of the 20 players, only 4 belong to SL Benfica, FC Porto, and Sporting CP. It is also important to emphasize that this is not a ranking of scored goals, but a ranking of effectiveness given the number of shots made per game turned into goals.

Influence

Regarding influence (weight of their goals in the clubs’ total), Sandro Lima from Gil Vicente FC (15th most effective forward) is the most influential striker so far, accounting for 40% of his team’s total goals and having participated in all Liga NOS games. It is also observed that 11 of the 20 players that are part of the ranking of the most effective forwards are also part of the list of the most influential ones.

Football Industry analyzed this issue verifying the performance of 73 clubs that remained in the main divisions of Germany, Spain, France, England, Italy, and Portugal between the seasons 14/15 and 18/19.

At first sight, based on the clubs and period mentioned above, Liga NOS and Ligue 1 are the championships with the highest profitability of scored goals (each scored goal represents, on average, 1.10 obtained points) followed by Liga Santander and Serie A with 1.04, Premier League with 1.02 and Bundesliga with 0.95.

These results are mainly related with the lower average number of goals scored by Portuguese and French clubs in contrast to other championships, compared to the number of points that are obtained at the end of the season. Thus, as an example, in the last 5 seasons, on average, Portuguese clubs reached 47 points scoring 44 goals, while in Germany, clubs needed to score 49 goals to achieve 47 points.

Other data can also be analyzed to further define this reality, namely, the average number of shots per game and conversion rate (percentage of shots turned into goals). In this scope, considering seasons 16/17, 17/18, and 18/19, Liga NOS has the lowest average number of shots per game, the same as Liga Santander (12.1), with Serie A having the highest value (13.4). However, Liga NOS has the highest conversion rate (11.5%) followed by Bundesliga (11.4%). Nevertheless, it is important to note that when we remove SL Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP from the analysis, both the number of shots per game and the conversion rate decrease to 11.3 and 9.9%, respectively.

A relationship between the points earned and conversion rates of the 73 clubs analyzed between 14/15 and 18/19, allows the observation of clubs global behavior, followed by its individual analysis compared to a prediction of its performance.

Thus, we present below a ranking of the 73 clubs according to their ability to turn their scored goals into points. We found that clubs like Nantes, Atlético de Madrid, and Juventus achieved a better average number of points than expected due to the conversion rate they showed and the relationship shown in the graph above.

Nantes:

  • Average number of points between 14/15 and 18/19: 49
  • Average conversion rate between 14/15 and 18/19: 7.9%
  • Expected average number of points between 14/15 and 18/19: 42
  • Result: 7 points higher than expected

Atlético de Madrid:

  • Average number of points between 14/15 and 18/19: 80
  • Average conversion rate between 14/15 and 18/19: 13.8%
